SILVESTRI CASTLE

The characteristic village of Calcio, located in the plain a few kilometres south-east of Bergamo, boasts a beautiful castle, with a richly frescoed internal courtyard.

Built on the ruins of a Roman villa from the second century. A.D., the castle has a splendid mosaic pavement, found in 1870 in its cellars. It is so harmonious that it is considered the best example of Roman art in the entire province of Bergamo, and is now visible in the Archaeological Museum of Bergamo.

The fortified building, whose construction began around the year 1000, became the property of Bernabò Visconti in 1366, who offered it as a gift to his wife Beatrice, Regina della Scala. Between the First and Second World Wars, the castle became a military hospital, becoming private property in 1956.

Today the Silvestri castle, whose frescoed rooms are embellished with splendid fireplaces, is the ideal location for functions. Particularly fascinating is the neoclassical lemonary, located in front of the garden and the charming pond with a fountain.
