What you will do:
- A guided tour of 3 unmissable places of worship in Upper Bergamo
- You will discover new places and areas usually not open to the public
What awaits you:
A tour of three symbolic attractions of Piazza Duomo, in Upper Bergamo, to discover their great artistic, historical and cultural value.
You will visit:
- The Cathedral of Sant'Alessandro, nestled between two other jewels: the Palazzo della Ragione and the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica. The interior of the Cathedral (Duomo) houses precious paintings by talented artists, including Giovanni Battista Moroni. Preserved in an urn on the high altar, are the remains of Saint Alexander (Sant’Alessandro), patron saint of Bergamo, to whom the Cathedral is dedicated.
N.B. Remarkably, you will access the choir, located behind the altar, usually not accessible to the public and you will therefore have the opportunity to admire the High Altar and the Sette Dipinti up close.
- The Baptistery, a particular octagon-shaped building, usually open only on the occasion of baptisms, will be opened in especially for the tour.
Noteworthy are the bas-reliefs, which decorate the internal walls, depicting some scenes from the life of Jesus, the work of the famous sculptor Giovanni da Campione. A building that has been moved several times over the centuries and that has finally found a fixed place in the western part of Piazza del Duomo.
- The Cathedral Museum, located in the basement of the Cathedral of Sant'Alessandro. Thanks to a long excavation project (2004-2012) traces of a Roman site emerged, of the early Christian Cathedral of San Vincenzo and the subsequent Romanesque Cathedral, wrapped in the Renaissance reconstruction of the architect Filarete. In the centre of this fascinating itinerary, the Cathedral’s Treasury awaits you, the astounding collection of precious artefacts that have survived over the centuries.
