From the airport to the city
The short cycle path that connects the airport with the city centre is usable both by bicycle and on foot and alternates between quiet and relaxing stretches and some short sections on the road.
Being in an urban area with dense traffic, it has several crossings but none on high-speed roads. It is also well lit when darkness falls, which makes it safe to use at any time.
For 70% it is on its own path, often on a shared pedestrian/cycle path, and quickly reaches the centre of Bergamo through the districts of Campagnola, Boccaleone and Borgo Palazzo.
Along the way it is possible to admire and photograph the upper town, which stands out at different points along the route.
Two short sections are along busy roads and in some areas. In some areas, the cycle path also uses a pedestrian path, so it is advisable to pay attention and moderate speed.
Leaving the arrivals area of Bergamo airport, on the right, the cycle path starts.
Immediately cross two roads that lead to the airport carparks, and you will start pedaling on the bike path for just over 1 kilometre.
When the path bends sharply to the right, leave it and continue on the road.
After the traffic light keep left and at the stop sign, on the other side of the road, turn right onto the cycle / pedestrian underpass. (pic6) (pic7)
It will take you to via Orio in the district of Campagnola, near Bergamo.
Pedal for 500 metres on the road and, a few metres before the traffic light, enter a narrow street in a small park and then again onto the road.
You will be on via Gasparini, the road you cross by going right on the cycle path that shares the footpath.
Once you reach the crossing, leave the cycle path and turn left (pic11) (pic12) along a shadowed and quiet street that shortly after takes you back to the shared pedestrian/cycle path.
This goes through the residential area of the Boccaleone district.
Go under the overpass and go right along the wall.
Now you have to ride along a fairly busy stretch of road. Go left slightly uphill and, at the traffic light, to the right, where you will pass the raised bridge over the railway tracks and enter via Piatti.
Then continue straight until the traffic light at Borgo Palazzo.
At this point it is advised to get off the bike and cross the intersection using the pedestrian traffic lights to reach the cycle path that is at the opposite corner of the intersection.
Now the cycle path is on the footpath. No need to worry about cars on this section, it is mostly frequented by pedestrians. When you reach the pedestrian traffic light on the left, cross it, then continue parallel to the tramway that runs to your right.
Cross the road with traffic lights, go right passing the railway tracks and via Bono near the roundabout.
Turn left and follow the path on the footpath that runs alongside the supermarket.
Follow it to the right in via Fantoni to the traffic light.
Get off the bike again to cross via Fantoni (left) using the pedestrian crossing, and get back on to ride the last stretch of the cycle path (always on the sidewalk) that runs parallel to via Angelo Maj.
At the traffic light turn left and, after a few metres, you will reach the Bergamo Train, Tram and bus station.
If you want to visit the city, at the traffic light on Via Angelo Maj turn right to reach lower Bergamo in a short time and, continue uphill for Upper Bergamo.
