The Gewiss Stadium stands proudly in the heart of Bergamo as the city’s most modern and spacious sports facility—a true source of pride for its residents and football fans alike.
History of Gewiss Stadium
Its story began in late 1927 when it was built on the site of the former hippodrome in Borgo Santa Caterina. The original playing field measured 120 by 70 meters and was surrounded by an ash athletic track, featuring two grandstands—one uncovered and one covered—with a maximum capacity of 12,000 seats.
Major Renovations and Modern Updates
Over the years, the stadium has undergone several major renovations to adapt to modern needs. Significant work was carried out in 2015: the renovation of the Central grandstand, the renovation of the Creberg grandstand, the removal of barriers between the Central grandstand and the field, and the construction of a new parterre for about 400 spectators.
In late April 2017, the municipality of Bergamo put the entire facility up for sale by public auction, which was awarded to Stadio Atalanta S.r.l., marking a new chapter in the stadium’s history. Subsequently, work began in 2019 on the complete renovation of the Pisani curve.
The Partnership between Atalanta and Gewiss
A pivotal moment came with the partnership between Atalanta and Gewiss in July 2019, leading to the stadium being renamed as Gewiss Stadium—a change that brought fresh energy to its identity and operations. This transformation culminated with the inauguration of the North Stand on October 6th of that year, adding an impressive 9,121 seats to its capacity.
Today, with a total capacity of 21,300 seats, the Gewiss Stadium symbolizes both architectural innovation and the passionate football culture that defines Bergamo—a must-see destination for sports enthusiasts visiting this vibrant city!
