Vagine Fountain

Description

lt was one of the first documented fountains in the history of the city, and it was fed by nearby water springs. During the Roman period it was known as fons opacinus (Tramontane fountain) for its position looking toward the North. It seems that the fountain was very famous for its curative qualities and foreigners came to admire it.

According to the descriptions by Mosè del Brolo in Liber Pergaminus (1120-1130), its vaults, floor and walls were covered in marble. The fountain could be used both by people and horses; it had a wash-house and a huge cistern.
