There are 9 cheeses that have acquired Denomination of Protected Origin (PDO) status but soon also another cheese (Strachitunt) will be endorsed by this prestigious recognition. Strachitunt is a very ancient cheese (the first records appear on a parchment dated 1380) which has been saved, acquiring international fame, thanks to the tenacity of a few farmers and producers in the Taleggio Valley.
Today Bergamo province is in first place in Italy for the number of PDO cheeses, and it is estimated there are approximately 150 working alpine pastures. Also worth keeping in consideration are goat farms and the increasing popularity of delicious goat’s cheese.
