The Villa dei Tasso dates back to the 16th century and is located in Bergamo’s historic Celadina district.
As its name suggests, it was a summer residence owned by the family of the same name, pioneers of communication and the postal system that spread throughout Europe.
People of high prestige and social class, who had the honor of hosting, in the very rooms of this mansion, important cultural and artistic figures of the caliber of Torquato Tasso, Giambattista Tiepolo, Francesco Zuccarelli and Francesco Tassi.
Built in the open countryside by Gabriele Tasso, it once represented the town’s most important agricultural estate: production was the responsibility of the farmers in their employ, which was then sold to the Serenissima Republic.
Its mills were fed by the Roggia Morlana, the artificial canal that surrounds the Villa and through which the Serio River flows.
However, the Villa represented more than just an important manufacturing nucleus.
As in any self-respecting sumptuous mansion, art is the protagonist, from the spectacle of frescoes and stuccoes to provide unparalleled class, to the late 17th-century staircase, to the 12 herms dedicated to the faces of the family in the postal business, preserved in the majestic Hall of the Generals and the Hall of the Lions.
The furnishings have not populated this residence for some time, but you can still admire their beauty at theCarrara Academy, where they are carefully preserved.
