Visiting this enchanting abbey, founded as many as a thousand years ago, you can still catch the atmosphere of a time of knights, crusades and religious mystery.
Nestled in the lush forests of Mount Canto, this church has kept intact its austere and fascinating Romanesque architecture, still embellished with fragments of the frescoes that once decorated its walls entirely.
In this enchanting place the Cluniac monks led a secluded life of meditation and prayer for the soul of the founder and his family.
Now the religious are no longer there, but walking among the buildings behind the church will feel like you’re back in their time.
Curiosity:
On the outside of the church, in an unusual location is placed an ancient tomb.
No one knows for whom it was intended and why it is there in the churchyard.
But it is not the only mysterious burial; in the cloister is another ancient tomb with a lid inlaid with a figure of a maiden.
Tradition traces it to the mythical figure of Teoperga, sister of St. Albert of Prezzate, founder of the Abbey.
the mysteries do not end there, there are many who wonder quae is the meaning of the faces carved at the base of one of the columns or what is the meaning of that one crowned head on the great outer arch.
