The Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows is located in Borgo Santa Caterina in the lower part of the city of Bergamo.
The history of the church is linked to the extraordinary event of the apparition of a star that illuminated the fresco of Our Lady of Sorrows placed on the face of a house, where the shrine was later built.
Work on the shrine ended in 1605, and the following year the wooden group of Our Lady of Sorrows, an exact copy of the fresco, was made, which is still carried in procession through the streets of the village on August 18, the day that commemorates the miraculous event of the Apparition.
Outside the church we find the large churchyard, and the building is in the shape of a Greek cross.
A fresco of the miracle can be admired on the high altar.
There are numerous sculptures and bas-reliefs of various value in the shrine: for example, twelve statues depicting twelve saints, the work of Antonio Rota, are kept there.
