The sanctuary of Basella near Urgnano, in the middle plains of Bergamo, was built in memory of an apparition of Our Lady that occurred in 1356.
Around 1460, Bartolomeo Colleoni arranged for an expansion of the church, to which a convent of Dominican friars was attached, sent in 1462 from the monastery of Santo Stefano in Bergamo, with charge of the sanctuary’s care and custody.
