Castel Merlo certainly already existed as a fortress castle in the 9th century: in fact, we have a document from 912 (10th century) found in the Monastery of Santa Grata in Bergamo (still active) which deals with a dispute between the castellan Count Martinengo and the Abbess of the Convent of Seranica (Villongo) on the feudal rights of the two.
The ancient origin can still be felt throughout the castle where medieval stairs and sixteenth-century frescoes still remain today. The refined renovation by the architect Alessandro Agrati has created a fantastic elegant and contemporary atmosphere.
