This vast space, which reaches as far north as the former Convent of St. Francis, took on its present dimensions in the late nineteenth century, with the work to rehabilitate the dilapidated conditions of the City.
A second and more intense phase of urban renewal took place between the 1930s and 1960s, with demolitions, opening of small squares and restorations.
Notable are the two medieval houses, called tower-houses, tall and narrow, overlooking the square.
