PIAZZA MASCHERONI (formerly Piazza Nuova)

The remains found in the ancient New Square

Description

Under Venetian rule, Piazza Mascheroni was the site of the market.
Inside one of the buildings surrounding it is a small treasure trove: impressive cellar structures and floors of buildings from the medieval and Renaissance periods.

Studies conducted between 1998 and 2011 unearthed remains of considerable importance: remains ranging from the Protohistoric to the Renaissance age.
A terracing wall from the 3rd/2nd century B.C. is the oldest find in this area.
Remains leading to the discovery of the existence of apsidal rooms with vaulted roofs (now lost), reused in medieval and modern times as workshops and warehouses.
