It is traditional for Our Lady to appear to the humblest of people, and again the rule is no exception: it was a farmer from the village of Sambusita, in the Serina Valley, who was chosen.
The Blessed Virgin asked for the building of a church, and in order to indicate precisely where to build it, she performed a miracle: she caused an olive branch to sprout from a beech stump.
The event had such a vast echo that it led to the construction of no less than three churches within a little more than a century!
Like a casket, the relic of the beech stump with the olive branch was placed in the first chapel, hidden by a marble slab under the altar.
The second church has been almost completely destroyed over time, and today it is not visible except as a place of passage between the chapel and the third church, which is called the “upper” church and is the one that currently houses the faithful.
