Located in Monasterolo del Castello, on Lake Endine in Val Cavallina, 30 km from Bergamo and just a 10-minute drive from Trescore Balneario, a town famous for its spa and Villa Suardi with frescoes by Lorenzo Lotto.
On a small hillock located between the southern end of Lake Endine and the left bank of the Cherio River, the origins of the castle are controversial: according to tradition, a Benedictine monastery stood on the area before the castle, which was destroyed at the time of Charlemagne and never rebuilt.
Around the year 1000 it was built as a fort to offer protection to the local population.
In the Renaissance it became a fine residence, losing its military significance, but from the 18th century until the early decades of the last century the castle experienced a period of decline.
In the 1930s Duchess Winifred fell hopelessly in love with the lake and bought the castle and began restoration work that led to the recovery of the interior and gardens.
Today, Monasterolo Castle is owned by the Acquaroli Group and is the perfect location for holding weddings and receptions.
The park is one of the most important in northern Italy and is a true botanical garden, in fact more than seven hundred tree species can be found.
