Atalanta has been a source of pride for many Bergamasks and others since as far back as 1907, the year of its birth.
The Gewiss stadium located in the heart of Bergamo is the most spacious and modern sports center in the city and is a great source of pride for its inhabitants.
The construction of the football stadium dates back to late 1927 on the area of the then existing hippodrome in Borgo Santa Caterina.
The playing field measured 120 by 70 meters and was surrounded by an athletic track, made of ash.
It featured two grandstands, one uncovered and one covered, and had a maximum capacity of 12,000 seats.
Over the years the stadium has undergone several major renovations, the last of which were very recent.
Several improvements were made in 2015, including the complete renovation of the Central grandstand, the renovation of the Creberg grandstand, the removal of barriers between the Central grandstand and the field, and the construction of a new parterre for about 400 spectators.
At the end of April 2017, the municipality of Bergamo publishes a notice of alienation by which it puts the entire sports facility up for sale by public auction, which is awarded shortly thereafter to the company Stadio Atalanta S.r.l. At the end of April 2019, work begins on the demolition and complete renovation of the Pisani curve.
Following the partnership between Atalanta and Gewiss, as of July 1, 2019 the stadium is named Gewiss Stadium.
Finally, on October 6, 2019, we witness the inauguration of the 9,121-seat Curva Nord.
The current capacity of the new facility is 21,300 seats.
