Located on the western shore of the beautiful Lake Iseo, between Riva di Solto and Lovere, is the charming town of Castro.
Discover the historic center, characterized by narrow streets and very close houses abutting the lake, built around the old parish church. Now deconsecrated, it has been replaced by the new parish church, built in 1969 and still named after St. James.
Visit the Church of the Nativity of Mary: known as the Madonna of the Cemetery, built in the 13th century and enlarged two centuries later, it contains frescoes dating from the 16th century. On the summit of the hill overlooking Castro, you can instead visit the small church of San Lorenzo, which dates back to the 12th century. Nearby you will also find the remains of the fortress that once dominated the landscape and was destroyed during the violent clashes between the opposing Guelph and Ghibelline factions.
Also take some time to take a walk along the lakefront and terrace with maritime pines and benches to enjoy the beautiful view.
Visit the Tinazzo Gorge Park or walk the Stross Trail, a footpath that leads from the coastal road to the scenic area of Castro, with thrilling views of the lake and theOrrido, imposing vertical slabs of rock overlooking the water.
If you love climbing, don’t miss the Castro Crag, a natural rock gym popular with local enthusiasts with convenient picnic area.
