Explore Bergamo with our itinerary that takes you from historic Bergamo Alta to bustling Città Bassa in 6 hours. Discover artistic treasures, breathtaking views and iconic sites such as Piazza Vecchia, Colle Aperto and Porta Nuova.
Bergamo is a city that will amaze you because it encompasses two faces: the historic one with the medieval buildings surrounded by the mighty walls, and the lively and modern one in the lower part. By following our itinerary you will have the opportunity to get to know both: enjoy a short but intense stay!
Taking the city’s most striking means of transportation, the funicular , you will find yourself catapulted into the Middle Ages of the communes and lordships. After looking around in Piazza Vecchia, where the Palazzo del Podestà and the Palazzo della Ragione stand out, we suggest you admire everything again from above, climbing to the top of the Campanone.
Every day at 10 p.m., the civic tower echoes through the city the 100 chimes of its bells, which once signaled the closing of the gates of the Venetian Walls: listen to them ring out in the silence of the evening.
Piazza Duomo is a treasure chest that holds some of the most precious jewels of upper Bergamo.
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with its wooden altarpieces inlaid according to the designs of Lorenzo Lotto; the Colleoni Chapel, which arose thanks to the 15th-century condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni: touch his characteristic effigy on the gate, it brings good luck! Finally, the cathedral, which houses paintings by Tiepolo and Giambattista Moroni.
After this breath of air filled with art, continue walking toward Colle Aperto along the “Corsarola,” an ancient Roman street.
Here you’ll find historic Bergamo bars and stores, as well as the Teatro Sociale.
From Colle Aperto along the walls you can enjoy the promenade with unparalleled views, stretching as far as the eye can see over the plain.
Go through Porta Sant’Agostino and continue your descent into Via San Tomaso, where you can pass by the classical art of the Carrara Academy to the contemporary art of the GAMeC simply by crossing the street. A few more steps and you’ll be in the center of Città Bassa: visit Porta Nuova with its neoclassical propylaea and the Centro Piacentiniano, built in the early 1900s. The Sentierone and Via XX Settembre are ideal destinations for shopping or a refreshing stop at some elegant café.
