To visit the largest man-made lake in the Bergamo mountains, you have to reach an altitude of 1862 meters, in Alta Val Seriana: this is where the Barbellino Lake is located, which collects water from several valleys and from the Natural Barbellino Lake.
Between 1926 and 1931, a massive dam was built to regulate the energy then produced at the nearby hydroelectric power plant. Thanks to its opening, every summer, on set dates, you can witness the grandiose spectacle of the Serio Falls.
About 10,000 cubic meters of water are discharged downstream creating a triple drop of 315 meters, the highest in Italy.
Mountain lovers can take very pleasant trails that pass close to the dam, including one that leads to the Curò Refuge.
It is interesting to know that in the summertime, at the base of the dam’s weir, you can encounter numerous ibex climbing along the wall, defying gravity in search of saltpeter, a very useful salt in their diet.
