Seriate is an Italian municipality in the province of Bergamo in Lombardy, traversed from north to south by the Serio River. It is located about 4 kilometers east of the provincial capital of Bergamo and is part of the Bergamo hinterland. The town of Seriate extends over an area of 12.41 square kilometers, predominantly flat, located on both banks of the Serio, which flows through it from north to south. The historical attraction of the Seriate area, particularly towards other municipalities in the Province of Bergamo, can be easily documented through the analysis of its residents: on one hand, those who have resided there since birth, and on the other, immigrants; from this analysis, it emerges that over 60% of the population comes from outside the area.
Modern-day Seriate emerged in the early 1960s, during the years of reconstruction and the economic boom. Traditionally agricultural, it saw the emergence of many industrial complexes at the end of the last century: a brewery, textile mills, and chemical and mechanical industries. The prospects of prosperity increased immigration, and the town began to expand, initially along roadways and then progressively in a spreading pattern. After the 1960s, with the gradual closure of large factories, Seriate’s residential character further solidified. During those years, entire neighborhoods sprang up from nothing, and the population growth led to a need for services to support the life of the area.
This need has accompanied Seriate in subsequent decades, during which it has sought to make the town a city that lives very close to Bergamo but is not merely a dormitory suburb. Today, Seriate is a municipality with high industrialization, especially in the manufacturing and construction sectors, characterized by small businesses. The tertiary sector is also of notable importance, linked both to the presence of health services (the hospital) and public services (municipal administration, schools, post office) as well as a commercial sector proportional to the town’s demographic weight.
