Did you know that one of the most famous opera arias, Una furtiva lacrima, was composed by Gaetano Donizetti, who was born in Bergamo and who is buried here?
Climb aboard a TukTuk that will retrace all the places that were the backdrop to the great Maestro’s beginnings. Starting from the theatre dedicated to him in the Lower Town, to then discover the house where he was born in Borgo Canale, that was once inspiration also to other musicians and organists of international standing.
Along the enchanting via Arena, we will reach the place where the young Gaetano took his first music lessons, just a few steps from the building which in the following years became the Conservatory of Bergamo.
During the visit, you cannot miss a stop at the stunning Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, where Donizettis funeral monuments are housed as well as the Chapel of Maestro Simon Mayr, his first enthusiast.
You will also admire the other marvellous buildings that make up Bergamos monumental centre, located in the area between Piazza Vecchia and Piazza Duomo: the Colleoni Chapel, the Baptistery, the Cathedral of Sant’Alessandro, the Palazzo della Ragione and the Contarini fountain: a concentration of art, architecture and history in the space of a few metres.
At the end of the visit you will return to the Lower Town along the Viale delle Mura, from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the plain, and Viale Vittorio Emanuele II, the ancient Via Ferdinandea.
