The splendid borough of the Upper Town is now more accessible thanks to two interventions carried out by the S.T.A.I. Project - Services for Accessible and Inclusive Tourism (2023), funded by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Lombardy Region, with the aim of promoting an inclusive tourism model in the territories of Bergamo and Brescia.
Those arriving in Upper Bergamo by car and parking at Parking Fara (10 free disabled parking spaces out of 400 public spots) will find, after taking the lift up to the historic centre, a convenient pathway paved with Sarnico Stone, leading to Via Gombito.
Designed for people with motor disabilities but naturally accessible to all pedestrians, this walkway, promoted by S.T.A.I. in collaboration with the Municipality of Bergamo, allows movement on a flat surface, free from the irregularities of cobblestones and the ancient road surfaces.
The route follows the layout of the existing pavement, which has been widened and completed where necessary, such as when crossing the road or driveways. Following it, you will pass through part of Piazza Mercato del Fieno, heading onto the quiet Via San Pancrazio, which leads to the small square and church of the same name, where you reach Via Gombito. From here, you're ready to explore the wonders of Bergamo Alta.
THE 3D MODEL OF THE BUILDINGS IN PIAZZA DUOMO
In the heart of the historic centre - in that Piazza Duomo which you reach by walking along the Corsarola and passing through the arcades of Palazzo della Ragione - a special installation awaits visitors from all over the world to reveal the secrets of the grand monuments surrounding the square.
This is the second intervention promoted by S.T.A.I., a magnificent 3D model of the Basilica of S. Maria Maggiore and surrounding buildings, created in brass after precise surveys were carried out by Skycrab drones (www.skycrab.net). Placed next to the entrance of the Basilica, the sculpture is especially dedicated to the visually impaired and blind, who, by tactile exploration of the incredible details of the surfaces, will be able to understand the appearance and external decorations of the surrounding buildings.
But that's not all. The learning aid is not only material but also auditory: by scanning the QR code on the installation, visitors can listen to an audio guide that vividly describes the architectural wonders of the square, their history, and the interiors, which are also decorated with masterpieces.
The visually impaired visitor can thus discover all the secrets of the Basilica of S. Maria Maggiore, a Romanesque-Baroque masterpiece of Bergamo, and the adjacent Colleoni Chapel, a unique example of the Italian Renaissance; of S. Alessandro Martire, the cathedral with a multifaceted history; of Palazzo della Ragione, the first civic building in Italy; and of course, the small Baptistery, as well as the Aula Picta and the Temple of Santa Croce.
