A new Reading Group by ANPI Bergamo and Libreria Palomar, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation. The first meeting will be with “Last Comes the Raven” by Italo Calvino.
Last Comes the Raven is a collection of short stories by Italo Calvino first published in 1949. The collection takes its title from a short story first published in the newspaper L’Unità on January 5, 1947.
Evocative and bitter, the story that gives its name to the entire collection stands as a reflection on the problematic nature of human morality and the problem of discerning good from evil. In fact, the boy does not join the partisan group out of firm ideological convictions or a desire for freedom from the invader; he simply, loving to shoot, desires the weapon the partisans have lent him along the river. Also unrelated to the dynamics of war is the final killing of the Nazi-Fascist soldier: the young man pursues him as he would pursue any other prey, and kills him with a cold strategy, which includes sacrificing the other animals passing by. Last Comes the Raven is characterized by a sharp, rapid style of dialogue and simple sentences; the pace, initially slow, accelerates at the junctures of the confrontation and the chase, while the final sequence is narrated from the point of view of the soldier, whose thoughts are obsessively followed, oscillating between the expectation of death and the hope of saving himself at the last minute.
The whole story should be told. Read together the Resistances
This is the title of a new initiative of the ANPI of Bergamo dedicated to the discovery, or rediscovery, of great books that tell the story of the Italian Resistance and other resistances, designed to mark the 80th anniversary of the Liberation from Nazi-Fascism. It is a new Reading Group, with free participation, with six appointments for six Fridays once a month, at the Palomar Bookstore in Bergamo.
