The Land of the Good Pope

Past pilgrims and current pilgrims: today it is the birthplace of John XXIII that attracts the veneration of faithful from all over the world.
If, however, you love tranquility more, try looking for the ancient abbey of Sant’Egidio.

Description

An important destination for pilgrims is Sotto il Monte, where John XXIII, the great pontiff of the Second Vatican Council and known as the “Good Pope,” was born.

In the village, the main destinations are: the modest peasant farmstead where Angelo Roncalli was born and grew up, the museum at Ca’ Maitino, where the future pontiff loved to stay and returned one last time on the eve of the Conclave that elected him pope, as well as the places of his childhood.

Many go as far as the nearby Abbey of St. Egidio, surrounded by green vineyards, which was particularly dear to John XXIII.
