Shrine of Our Lady of the Castle

The castle is gone, in return you can admire sacred architecture ranging from medieval Romanesque to fifteenth-century elegance!

Description

Built overlooking the Brembo River on the site of a very old castle, the church (16th cent.) dominates a wide view and is leaning against the ancient Pieve di San Salvatore (7th cent.), one of the best-preserved in all of Bergamo’s pre-Romanesque period.

Two side stairs lead to the crypt, the oldest in the province, which preserves the atmosphere of ancient places of worship.

Rectangular in plan, it is divided transversely by four columns with capitals partly perhaps salvaged from a pre-existing Roman building.
Inside are frescoes dating from the 10th to 16th centuries and a 12th-century sandstone ambo.
