Castello Colleoni Martinengo is located in Cavernago, in the Bergamo countryside, just 20 minutes from the city of Bergamo and less than an hour from Milan.
Its centuries-long history begins before the 13th century as a building of unknown use, only to change radically when it became the property of the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni (1470), who transformed it to make it militarily more defensible-a fate shared by the nearby Malpaga Castle-but also more representative and livable for his own family.
Inherited by his daughter Ursina and her husband Gherardo Martinengo-Colleoni, in the following centuries the building continued to have a certain strategic importance and experienced new modifications under Counts Giovannelli and Mazzotti.
The castle is still a splendid private noble residence, inhabited by the Gonzaga family of Vescovato.
With its square plan, large double-loggia courtyard, stream-crossed garden and Baroque touches that have decorated it since the 17th century, it is a place to visit at least once in a lifetime.
It is reached by walking down the avenue that begins at the church of St. Mark the Evangelist and entering it by crossing the bridge over the ancient moat, once filled with water.
In the exterior loggias and interior rooms you will find splendid frescoes, some signed by Giacomo Barbello of Lodi, others by Gian Battista Azzola.
The castle is open and can be visited during Castles Days.
If you want to experience all the excitement of a bygone era, don’t miss it in the evening, in the light of the sunset and the torches reverberating on the stone of the tower.
Cavernago Castle, a silver crown in the Golden Roll of Period Residences, is also a splendid location for events.
It can accommodate up to 250 guests and offers services such as reserved parking, scenic lighting with flashlights and flashlights, a dance floor, piped music, a playroom equipped for children, and free wi-fi internet access.
The venue is available until 10 p.m. for lunches and until 1 a.m. for dinners, with four menu items to customize, wedding cake, sommelier-selected drinks and prestigious mise en place.
