The gunboat of S. Giovanni is a valuable record of military life and technology in Bergamo at the time of Venetian rule.
If you walk along the route of the Walls, you will easily find it near the bulwark of the same name.
The Gunnery is accessible by a metal staircase that rises at the old maneuvering plaza.
It consists of two large vaulted rooms, the first of which is connected to the sortie on the floor.
In the two quadrangular openings made inside the walls were inserted the gun ports, which, however, were never used since the fortress did not suffer any siege.
In 2007, about 1,800 cubic meters of soil had to be removed to bring it to light.
Since 2009, this space, perfectly recovered and equipped with historical-informational supports, has been open to the public.
One more thing.
On the surface you will notice a steel structure mounted on a stone support.
It is a sundial, an ancient object given a contemporary twist by its curved shapes and polished material.
It marks daylight saving time, solar time and the compass rose.
The benches and lawn seem to invite you to stop and enjoy the view of all of lower Bergamo, or to lie on the grass, enjoying the sunshine and a good book.
