The term “Gombito” derives from the very location of the tower, which stands ad compitum, that is, at the point of intersection of the cardo and decumanus maximus of the Roman city (St. Lawrence Street/Mario Lupo Street and Gombito Street, respectively).
It was built in the 12th century and reaches, today, a height of 52 meters compared to the original 64 meters.
The tower has retained its original appearance, characteristic of medieval defensive constructions.
In the 16th century on the first floor two workshops were started on both sides.
The building maintained a commercial vocation until the last decade of the twentieth century.
Donated to the City of Bergamo in 1877, the tower underwent a series of structural interventions that respected its perfect masonry technique and skillful construction details.
One more thing.
Climb the 263 steps and discover the most impressive view of the city: the top of the tower is a privileged belvedere.
From the terrace you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the city, the plains, the hills and valleys of Bergamo, and, on the clearest days, your gaze will sweep as far as Milan and the mountains.
