Venetian powder magazine

These military buildings were built only in such places as “not to be seen from the countryside, and not to bring damage to the built-up area in case of some misfortune,” as stated in the 1748 “Scientific treatise on fortification over the particular history of Bergamo.”

Description

Built at the end of the 1500s like the one in the Open Hill valley, -in sandstone, formed by superimposing a pyramid on a vaulted parallelepiped.

2 meters thick and 7 meters high, it had its top lined with lead to ensure impermeability , necessary for the good preservation of gunpowder.

Walls and powder magazines are the only Venetian military structures that remain intact to this day.
