Medieval Italian cities were divided into districts, in Bergamo called vicinie.
They were named after the local church, elected consuls, took care of welfare, public order, church decorum, and the market.
The small square in the vicinity of St. Pancrazio has in the center the fountain designed in 1549 by Leonardo Isabello, son of Pietro Isabello, author of many palaces and churches in the city.
In the Civic Library the minutes of the assemblies of the neighbors of S. Pancrazio held in the 13th cent. are still preserved on parchment.
