SYLVESTER CASTLE

FROM THE BEAUTIFUL INTERIOR FRESCOES TO THE ENCHANTING TREE-LINED PARK

Description

The quaint village of Calcio, located on the plains a few kilometers southeast of Bergamo, boasts a beautiful castle, with a richly frescoed inner courtyard.

Rising on the ruins of a 2nd-century AD Roman villa, the castle features a splendid mosaic floor, discovered in 1870 in its cellars.
It is so harmonious that it is considered the best example of Roman art in the entire province of Bergamo, and can now be seen in the Bergamo Archaeological Museum.

The fortified building, whose construction began around the year 1000, became the property of Bernabò Visconti in 1366, who offered it as a gift to his wife Beatrice, Queen of La Scala.
At the turn of World War I and World War II, the castle became a military hospital, becoming private property in 1956.

Today the Silvestri Castle, whose frescoed rooms are embellished with splendid fireplaces, is an ideal location for receptions.
Particularly charming is the neoclassical lemon house, located in front of the garden and the charming pond with fountain.
