One of the oldest streets in the city, it owes its name to the presence in Roman times of an amphitheater in the western part of the City.
It is delimiteditated to the south by the high and austere wall of the Monastery Benedictine St. Grata, interrupted by the baroque portal of the church, built from 1591 onwards to a design by Pietro Ragnolo.
On the opposite side is noted the imposing Palazzo della Misericordia, now the home of the Donizettiano Museum.
