Gaetano Donizetti always remained deeply connected to Bergamo, his birthplace. Born in a humble home in the Borgo Canale neighbourhood—now a museum dedicated to him—the composer began his musical journey thanks to the Pio Istituto delle Figlie di Maria, where he was discovered by Simon Mayr, who became his mentor.

Another significant site tied to his legacy is the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where Donizetti rests, commemorated by a delicate marble monument featuring musical cherubs and a grieving Muse. A visit to the Donizetti Museum can be enriched by a stop at the Basilica, offering a complete journey into his life and legacy.
